Not enough to save a brand that was great, but impossible to defend, really. That’s just the way it is, and not even a reprobate like LIKELIHOOD OF CONFUSION objects to the phasing out of brands with histories and associations like thisby market forces, of course.

  • Ron, I grew up on Aunt Jemimah in the 50s. The lady on the packaging reminded me of the older colored women I knew but that’s not why my mother bought the mix. (We used sorghum molasses and honey and didn’t use the syrup.) FYI, there was also a popular brand of canned oysters with a smiling black man on the front called “Nigger Head.” That one went the way of the dodo bird in the 60s after the Civil Rights Act was passed. I don’t really get that Uncle Ben’s is “racist” other than the use of the term “uncle,” which was a common term used for older people, white as well as black, just as “aunt” was used for older women.
