Says here that GEEKZONE is now a registered trademark in New Zealand.
No word whether MIT (or any fellow travelers) entered an opposition to the registration due to its own prior and well known use of the term “geek.”

Geek is an English word and can not be trademarked. Geekzone is not an English word, and the New Zealand office did not find a previous use of this creation in the sections which were used to apply for the trademark.
So, how can MIT claim ownership of Geek?
Trademarks are given in the understanding that will not cause confusion within categories.
You are, of course, right. You don’t have much of a sense of humor, but you’re 100% right.
By the way “trademark” is not a verb. 😉
Ooops. Fair enough 🙂 Should be registered.
Sorry if sounds like no sense of humour. I actually have quite a large one – and I love a good laugh – but the subject seemed so serious.
Cheers!
